Sanjay's primary teaching lineage is non-dual, in the tradition of the great Indian sage Ramana Maharshi. His own path turned decisively in Lucknow, India, where he experienced a major awakening in the presence of Papaji (H.W.L. Poonja), a direct student of Ramana Maharshi and a renowned sage in his own right.
That awakening became the beginning of the work, not its end. In the decades since, Sanjay has trained deeply across the Buddhist and Hindu contemplative traditions and, in parallel, across Western depth psychology and body-mind therapeutic disciplines, because he saw, in himself and in the many practitioners he has guided, that recognition of our true nature and the healing of the psyche are two halves of one whole.
Sanjay cofounded Clear Sky Sangha in Tucson with Anna Douglas and ran it for many years. He taught regularly at the Tubac Meditation Center. He helped start the Miraval Resort and Spa Mindfulness program. He has held retreats and teachings at Onsite Workshops, at the Sinking In Festival in Germany, the Tucson Community Meditation Center and other locations.
Much contemporary meditation teaching leaves practitioners stranded in one of two ways. Some approaches point brilliantly to awakening but ignore the psyche, leaving trauma, limiting beliefs, and emotional patterns untouched beneath a spacious exterior. Others offer valuable stress reduction and self-improvement but never open the deeper question of who is practicing.
Sanjay's teaching refuses that split. It honors the direct, non-dual recognition at the heart of Ramana's tradition and the principles of psychological and emotional literacy, healing of the psyche, and healthy ego development. Awakening is treated as the beginning of integration, not a bypass around it.
"You are not learning to become something. You are recognizing what you have always been, and then letting every part of your life catch up to that recognition."
Out of this integration, Sanjay has developed his own meditation methods, taught in his groups and courses:
A practice that opens the felt sense of the body into boundless space, uniting somatic awareness with non-dual recognition.
Combining non-duality, mantra meditation, and mindfulness: cultivating loving-kindness, gratitude, and okayness while resting as the infinite field of awareness in which they arise.
Methods that leverage depth psychology to trace beliefs, patterns, and identities to their roots and release them.
Methods that leverage NLP to dissolve limiting beliefs and the identities built upon them.
A contemplative inquiry drawing on Nagarjuna's teachings on the Middle Way, using a statement and its opposite to reveal the emptiness of all fixed positions.
An evolving body of practices refined through decades of teaching and clinical work.
These methods are designed to be genuinely progressive, meeting practitioners where they are, working with the body and emotions rather than around them, and ripening naturally into effortless resting as awareness.
New offerings are in development: public courses, AI-supported tools for meditation, awakening, and integration, and MeditateWithLight.com, a forthcoming home for specialized photobiomodulation protocols for meditation, paired with guided practices.
